Template:AirportsCharlotte-Douglas International Airport is a major US airport and the second largest airport in North Carolina. It serves western North Carolina and portions of South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as a major international hub.
History[]
Charlotte received Works Progress Administration funding to establish Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The airport opened in 1936.
One year later, Eastern Air Lines began scheduled service. The USAAF established Charlotte Air Base in 1941.
In 1954, a 70,000-square-foot passenger terminal opened. The terminal had two floors.
Delta Air Lines began service in 1956. By 1957 there were 57-weekday departures on Eastern, 7 Piedmont, 6 Capital, 4 Delta and 2 Southern. Nonstop service did not reach beyond Newark, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Louisville, Birmingham and Jacksonville.
In 1979, Piedmont Airlines made Charlotte-Douglas its hub. In 1987, Piedmont Airlines started non-stop flights with their 767 to London.
Currently, airlines serve CLT to London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich and Hamburg.
