Introduction
Template:AirportsRaleigh-Durham International Airport is an airport located between Raleigh and Durham in the heart of the Research Triangle. The airport is primarily used to serve air traffic in Central and Eastern North Carolina.
History
Raleigh-Durham International Airport started as Raleigh Municipal Airport in 1929. However, rising demand caused the North Carolina General Assembly to create a new airport between Raleigh and Durham in 1939. Eastern Airlines supported this route change - of which chairman of Eastern Airlines Eddie Rickenbacker wanted to make RDU a stopping point on their New York-Miami route.
The new airport opened 1 May 1943 with Eastern Airlines serving the airport. Soon, Piedmont Airlines - an airline created in North Carolina - arrived and started operations at Raleigh-Durham and nearby Charlotte-Douglas.
In the 1970s, Piedmont Airlines had flights coming in from CLT, GSO, New Bern, Norfolk, Richmond, Rocky Mount, Washington, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.
Soon after, Raleigh-Durham became focus cities of Frontier and Delta Airlines/Air Lines.
